Gatlinburg Area Children Begging to Go Back to School??

For eight straight days, Sevier County students have not had school because of an unusually snowy winter here in the Smoky Mountains and a planned 4 day weekend for President's Day.  Although all of the roads in the valley areas of our Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville communities are clear, the mountaintop areas are anything but clear.  School buses filled with children would of course not be safe on snow covered mountain roads and for this reason, school has been cancelled since Wednesday of last week.  School administrators have announced that school WILL be in session on Thursday but will be opening two hours late.  That is, however, the same plan that was in place for today until around 6:30 AM this morning when the announcement was made that school would in fact again be cancelled.

It has gotten so bad that even many of our school students, to say nothing of their parents, are begging for school to be back in session.  Parents are particularly frustrated as child care arrangements have to be made by parents who work outside their homes.  It has been irritating for those of us in the real estate business too as the mountaintop areas are often where our most popular second homes are located.  I took these photos this morning of a couple of new foreclosures in Chalet Village (just above Gatlinburg) that we have been assigned:

This last picture is particularly telling, as that railing has about 6 inches of snow on top of it.  Great news for our Ober Gatlinburg ski slope but probably means yet another day of "no school" for area students...
