As the world becomes less and less safe, real security is unfortunately becoming a greater and greater concern. It is my opinion that as this sad trend continues, we may all wish that we lived behind gates in neighborhoods that are accessible only by owners and their invited guests. Even though Sevier County still has very low crime rate, the challenges that many parts of the country already have may eventually find their way here. Many developments around Sevier County have gated entrances for just this reason but sadly, many (if not most) of these gates are no longer functional. With the painful real estate recession of the past several years, home owner associations felt the pinch as home owners that were near foreclosure typically didn't pay their HOA fees. Furthermore, developers caught in the downturn were quick to abandon fledgling HOA organizations and one of the consequences were the non-functional gates at those development's entrances.
