Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC), headquartered in nearby Bryson City, North Carolina is making dramatic progress on the construction of their new Great Outpost store in Gatlinburg which is slated to open in 2010. The 18,000 square foot store will be located on the long idle, but unmistakably prime real estate where for many years the original Open Hearth Restaurant was located. Bordering the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the south end of Gatlinburg, this is another key to the continued re-development of downtown Gatlinburg. When the Gatlinburg Gateway development at the north end of Gatlinburg is considered, it is clear that Gatlinburg is definitely in a strong growth phase, despite the concerns of a lackluster national economy. As the late Paul Harvey said once, "Have you ever seen a fall that wasn't beautiful?", every October is filled with God's radiant colors. Fall 2009 however may be especially beautiful however because of the summer we've had. Frequently by this time of year, the trees are a little stressed and begin dropping their leaves in frustration, if trees can indeed be frustrated. Dry summers, which we actually enjoy for recreation, are tough on our Gatlinburg area vegetation. In fact, the leaves that were so green in the springtime are often a little more subdued by the end of the summer and this leads to only an average fall color season. Because this summer wasn't as hot as some years and was definitely wetter than average this October should truly be wondrous here in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. As an amateur photographer, our area's natural beauty is a wonderful subject and I am particularly looking forward to some special opportunities this fall. If y...

Spring is Here and So are Our Guests! The days are longer and warmer, the nights are milder, the trees are blooming, and East Tennessee is awash in color as everything is blooming. Allergy sufferers take note, the next month or so is a high pollen period and even folks who don't think they have allergies may find themselves sneezing. Something not to sneeze at however is the number of visitors already here right now. The restaurant parking lots are full and there is a wait tonight at most of the better dining spots. Another sign that spring is here is the traffic has started to pick up although it isn't yet an issue - that comes in July and October when those of us who live here generally want to take our vacations elsewhere and let the tourists have Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Sevierville, formerly not greatly affected by tourism now finds itself in the middle of the mix due to all of the new commercial development in the city so it is no longer exempt from the crowds either...

Anyone Looking to Buy a Condo? What a difference a year makes! In the period 1/01/2007 through 2/28/2007 there were ten condominium units sold in Pigeon Forge by members of our local board , The Great Smoky Mountain Association of Realtors. During the same period this year the number of condos sold by the local Realtors is exactly ONE . Because the pace is so dramatically different there are some real bargains to be found, including a remarkable condo foreclosure property we currently have listed . The dramatic decline in the pace of sales isn't limited to condos however or to Pigeon Forge for that matter. Here is the latest update to my summary of area residential sales by month. For those of us who love the Smoky Mountains that I am blessed to call my home we love the change of seasons and scenery here in and around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Each mild yet distinct season has its own special character and charm and sometimes winter is overlooked. The fun outdoors in summer is unmatched with mountain streams and rivers that are perfect to to swim in, hike beside, or just relax by. Our Gatlinburg area is famous for it's autumn color that we treasure and millions of people come every October to view the leaves as they change from that rich green of summer to spectacular hues of red, yellow, and orange. In fact, July is generally our busiest tourist month and October is a close second. In the spring, we have wildflower hikes and many of the craft shows to enjoy as well as the blooming of nearly everything. If you have serious issues with pollen or grass allergies you may NOT want to visit in the Spring but for t...

Yet Another Reason We Love Living in the Smokies In addition to the mild climate, low taxes, very low crime, the friendliness of the people, the economic opportunities, and the majestic beauty of the mountains (all of which I have discussed in earlier posts to this blog) there is yet another reason to live here in the Gatlinburg area. This would be our wonderful wildlife. A client of ours recently took this photo from his yard: In the right hand edge of the photo you will see my red, white, and blue RE/MAX All Pro, Realtors sign in the Hayman's yard. If you look closely in the center of the photo in the fog you will see something MUCH larger. This is one of the elk that strayed from the nearby Smoky Mountain National Park. Although very shy of humans and absolutely no danger to anyone, they are imposing simply because of their size. A full grown male elk is a huge animal with adult males weighing an average of 600-700 pounds while cows average 500 pounds. Adults are 7-10 feet long ...
